Your First Yoga Class: A Gentle Guide for Complete Beginners
Feeling a little nervous before your first class is completely normal. Here's what to wear, what to expect and how to choose a class, so you can walk in feeling ready.

Everyone in the room had a first class once. Yoga isn't a test you pass or fail, and nobody expects you to touch your toes on day one. A little preparation simply helps you relax and enjoy it.
What to wear
Choose comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in, like leggings or loose pants and a fitted top that stays in place when you bend forward. Yoga is practised barefoot, so there's no need for special shoes.
What to bring
- A bottle of water
- A small towel, especially if you tend to get warm
- Your own mat if you have one. If you don't, message the studio beforehand to check.
Eating before class
Try to avoid a heavy meal in the two to three hours before class. If you're hungry, a small snack like a banana or a handful of nuts about an hour before is usually fine.
Arrive a little early
Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class. It gives you time to settle in, and to tell the teacher if it's your first class, or if you have any injuries or health conditions, or are pregnant. Teachers can only help with what they know about.
During the class
- Go at your own pace. Every pose has easier variations. Use them.
- Rest whenever you need to. Child's pose is always an option, and resting is part of the practice.
- Don't compare. The person next to you may have practised for years. Your only job is your own breath and body.
- Keep breathing. If you notice you're holding your breath, it's a sign to ease off a little.
There's no perfect pose. There's only your next breath.
After the class
Drink some water and take a moment to notice how you feel. It's common to feel a little stiff the next day if you've used new muscles. That usually eases as you keep practising.
